Carlos is a physical geographer interested in learning historical ecology and landscape evolution as a basis for supporting local sovereignty processes. He has worked in community-based forestry with Mayan villages in the northern tropical rain forests, cloud forests, and alpine forests in Guatemala. Since 1998, he has gained experience in the co-production of knowledge with Mayan villages. Currently, he is collaborating with his research team in Guatemala to support locally based education both in rural and urban contexts.
Carlos earned a BSc in biology at San Carlos University in Guatemala, an MSc in rural development at ECOSUR in Mexico, a PhD in physical geography at the University of Toronto, and a post-doctoral degree at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama.
